Still life: A Cup and an Onion

Tarthur 06 Jun 2026

This one is a monochromatic pratice piece using only two colours: Titanium White and Ivory Black. I made a 'shadow box' from a cardboard box, made a simple still life arrangement inside it, and pointed a desk lamp at it.

The practice had multiple goals: practice construction (I over constructed), blocking in colours, palette control with 5 different shades (I finally succeeded in not making a total mess!), painting what you see, and finally an additional challenge: I used only one size 10 flat brush, to learn how it works, and to use big enough brush to be uncomfortable when using it. It was after all between 1/3 - 1/2 the size of my onion.

I'm pleased sith the results, but it took a long time. Using only one brush slowed me down, but I also was treading on unfamiliar territories. The gradients came out pretty smooth, and the objects have a 3D look. Maybe the handle isn't as good as it could, as to my eyes it's not super obvious what it's orientation is. I learned a ton, but struggled a bit with the lack of colours, took some time to figure out what colours to paint the ground and the walls, so I could still have outlines of the set pieces. I also learned that you can do pretty intricate stuff with a big brush, when you are careful and manage your palette well. :)
