My first try at a face. Used white canvas
There are many layers, lots of texture!

Thanks ya'll! I started with a very thin wash of Van Dyke brown with a little burnt sienna. I added a super thin wash of red on all the places that I wanted that. Then after I had painted the details on the face, I went back and used my palette knife to paint several layers (mostly around the edges though, I didn't use a lot of pallet knife on his face).
