Sunset at Aekingerzand

TitiaD 05 Feb 2024

"Sunset at Aekingerzand"
January 21, 2024
Oil on canvas
80x50 cm

Based on a photograph I took a couple of years ago.
Aekingerzand is an area with heather and sanddunes and the evergreens (Scots pines according to Google Translate) are pretty short and they can have the weirdest shapes.

The red on the tree trunks is pure Cadmium Red.
I thought it might be too much colour, but in the end it all fits imho.
Exaggerating colours can work quite well in some cases.

And... the entire painting was done with the paint knife.
The greyish/brown colours you can see at the edges is the colour of the canvas.
I stretched this canvas myself and instead of using the primed side, I stretched it with the original canvas colour up front. And then used transparent gesso on it.

It is a beautiful painting Titia! i think those warm colors add the feel of sunset. It is difficult to say how tall the pines are, but they surely look very cute. Very interesting idea to use transparent gesso.

@Ninoum:
We have some very pretty spots of nature. Just too bad there's so little of it.
There's 17 million of us on a piece of land that is perhaps Connecticut and Rhode Island combined. So a lot of the land that's not towns/cities is used for agriculture. Not much space left for large natural areas.

These older landscapes with the heather, Scots pines (which are about the only native pines this country has, the rest has been imported over the years) and sand dunes are my favorite.
And I also love the Wadden Sea coast.

Most of the country is flat as a pool table, (and below sealevel) so whenever I go abroad, I love going to places with hills and mountains. :D

lovely trees,love it!

Really impressive work with the knife! I agree that the CAD red works. It hints that your inspiration photo was taken at exactly that fleeting moment light illuminated the tree trunks perfectly.

TERRIFIC! At first glance I did not even realize it was all knife work. It does look very much like a photo! The cad red on the trees is PERFECT, and really makes the composition.

Fantastic painting Titia.

Thank you all! <3

@ jlstutz98 :
It was indeed taken at that moment. And the foreground sand was more or less in the shadow, looking cooler, but not yet dark. So there's some of the sky colours in there.
