Cascading Water - Robert Warren

Tom0779 26 Jul 2023

My first try at a Robert Warren tutorial. I have several tutorials of Robert in different Alexander Art books but I wanted to see him painting on TV first before I paint one after the books. This episode (I do not have the book version of it) was the only one I could find on YouTube and thus I painted this.

He has a totally different painting style compared to Bill Alexander or Bob Ross. Im ,my opinion his painting style reminds me more on Kevin Hill.
I like several things like e.g. no use of a script liner brush (I hate this brush , LOL) or the well thought lighting. I also like the use of the liquid black which is a nice and too rarely used medium in my opinion.
I am not so much a fan of creating foliage with small brushes like the background trees..
Also I would have preferred to create the rocks with the knife instead of using a brush but maybe this is just a matter of practice.
I think the outcome is quite nice regarding the fact that this was my first touch with Robert Warrens technique.
I think I will for sure recreate other paintings by him in the future.

AND: huge credit to Tom Anderson on Alexander Art - he showed me to scratch in the signature instead of using the lousy liner brush. This is sooo super. Signature done in 10 seconds and it looks better :)

This came out great Tom!!! I love everything about it! I feel the same about rocks. I think the knife offers a better texture.

Robert is a mix of Bill/Bob and Kevin Hill indeed. That's what I like about him. He offers the best of both worlds.

Thanks a lot Nancy. Yes I totally agree with you. I will for sure do something from him in the future too.

Beautiful job Tom. I like his small brush trees. That may be because it works well for my preferred style. I have a couple videos from Robert. If you would like me to share them with you email me at tomiwilson518@gmail.com.

Thanks a lot Tomi, I am glad you like the picture. Some people prefer those foliages other do not. Normally I am not a very spontaneous guy but with the trees and bushes I am like Bill and I want to fire them in, LOL.
Thanks for the offer. I have sent you an email. In case you want to have something from my book collections just let me know as well :)

Love the highlights of the sun hitting the trees.

Thank you Daddio!

Just gorgeous! Love all your details!

Thank you Cold!

Looks really good. I espiecally like the clouds very much, also lighting and color value is superb in my opinion!

Many thanks Jim. I think Mr Warren has some nice tutorials. They differ from others a lot.

I don’t know how I missed this one Tom but I wish that I had seen it before I attempted this painting. I think that it would have saved me a lot of headaches! So beautiful and the lighting is amazing!

Thank you Brian! No worries, you can never check all the paintings. I am currently also behind checking them.
