Mount Hood Sunset - Bill Alexander

Tom0779 23 Jan 2023

As I did a painting for my son (Pastel Seascape) to hang up in his room, I also wanted to paint something for my daughter (8). After a few reviews the episode 'Mount Hood Sunset' by Bill Alexander has been chosen by her.
It is a very moody painting, not much overloaded with details. Only the mood counts. (reminds me a bit on the paintings by Nivek1971)
For this episode I bought a tube of permanent rose which is really a nice color to use. Bill uses rose madder but I think there is not much difference between those two colors.
This scene also gives you a an opportunity to use the liquid black. I have painted a lot of other paintings using the liquid black.
Bill taught me a lot of different stuff which Bob did not. One of them is color harmony. I think the colors in this picture really fit together. Even the blue on the shadow side. Even there is no blue in the sky and thus there would not be any blue reflection on the shadow side (only in case you want to paint photo realistic) I think this color really is in harmony with the other elements.
The almost not existing foreground also is in sync with the whole scene I think.
However my daughter is very happy about this present. I still wait for a frame and then we will hang it up.
Furthermore I think the mountains in this picture really turned out well from the shape to the highlights.
This is oils on canvas panel 16 x 24 in (40 x 60 cm).
I hope you enjoy as well as my daughter did.

That mountain is gorgeous! Loving all of the texture you created.

Thanks for your support Pam!

Again Tom... AMAZING! It's gorgeous. The realism is striking!

I watched an episode of Bill Alexander to see how he teaches. He is really good. Def more vibrant than our calming Bob. Lol!!

Which painting of Bill do you suggest me to try first? Since I am very new to him, what would be easier to start with?

Awesome scene Tom! I really like the colors and the highlight side looks fantastic!

Thanks Nancy. I am happy you like it. Bill is quite a character, isn’t he?
I think it is sometimes tough to follow him and Bob’s tutorials are organized much better. But one can definitely learn different things from him.
Recently I painted an episode called winter woods. I think this is really easy and provides a nice alternative to avoid the liner brush which I always try.
Maybe you give him a chance. For me it was worth it and I learned something different.

Thanks a ton Brian!

Thank you so much for that recommendation Tom! I will def give it a shot!

Tom, really great mountain. I like that highlight is in line with the sky color. Great shape and one can think that sunset is on the right. I agree with you that Bill teaches more of artistic approaches compared to Bob and as you mentioned in the other painting he gives viewers different things to try painting. His energy seem to work better for some people than Bob’s and unless one tries one cannot know.

Great Nancy. Can’t wait to see your picture when finished 😀

Thanks Sunny for your feedback. You are absolutely right. From Bill I learned much more the more exact I listened to him.
His primary goal was not to create a tutorial which is somehow very complex to get an impressive end result. His episodes made me think more about composing a scene.
I mentioned it several times that Bob made the better structured episodes than Bill. For his episodes I need much more time to finish a picture.
Bill is a bit unstructured sometimes, and often he doesn’t explain things in detail. But his range of different types of paintings is much wider than Bob’s.
What I also like is that Bill often used limited palettes.
On the other hand I like the more calm approach from Bob. But it is an individual thing.

Beautiful painting and more inspiring to me then Bill's own version.

Thank you very much Jos!
