Original Creation

Winter Woods - Bill Alexander

Tom0779 09 Feb 2023

I painted this several weeks ago.
I absolutely like this idea from Bill to paint the scene on a black canvas and to scratch the limbs out with the pallet knife to avoid the liner brush.
I absolutely also love the idea of this sky which creates a very special mood. At least to me. As I loved the sky that much I didn't want to cover up a lot of it. Thus I used the fan brush to create some evergreen like trees which cover up only a little of the sky area.
Overall this is quite an easy painting and it could be a first painting if you never painted before.
This is oils on canvas panel 16 x 20 in. (40 x 50 cm)

I love this and have saved your version to paint in the future! Really super Tom!

Super Arbeit Tom! Great work 👍🏼😎

Many thanks Brian. Yes this is a very cool episode with a lot of new ideas, e.g. creating limbs and background trees by scraping the color off.
Good luck and I can't wait to see your version :)

Vielen Dank Dirk. This is a real funny episode which I recommend to everyone who likes to paint, maybe you give it a try too :)

I have 2 others on my list, but then let's see 😎you have set the bar very high again

Can't wait to see your version Dirk if you give it a try!

Now you're putting pressure on me, hahahaha😁😎nur Spaß

This is gorgeous Tom! I totally agree, what a brilliant idea to scape off paint to create something similar to liner brush work.

No pressure Dirk :) Painting should be fun!

Thanks Nancy, I can tell you the liner brush isn't my favorite one. Especially with oils ;) I avoid it whenever I can :P

This looks really cool. Great job. I want to check out this episode of his.

Thanks Thommy :) Glad you like it.

I love how dramatic this is, brilliant use of the knife. The knife is my favorite tool when it comes to clean up, no brush washing needed. I hope to try this one soon! Thanks for the inspiration :)

Many thanks Jeff. I am glad that you like it and that so much people now want to try that episode :)

This reminds me rather flooded /marshy area, probably coz of the color. Great trick of Bill you shared. I have not seen this episode. I think left pine shadow need to be 7 o’clock, somehow it catches attention and bothers. I really like this painting of yours! Probably avoiding liner brush worked wonders for you. ;)

Thank you Sunny. I think the colors are more kind of a foggy day. At least where I am living this is quite a common winter.
Regarding the shadow I do not see much problem here. It needs to go wider than the ones in the center. I think it follows common sense.
And yes the liner brush isn’t my best friend with oils. I can do it but only if I must.

Wonderful job. The paucity of evergreen foliage is perfect with the eeriness and "cold" projected. The branches and twigs from scraping the paint with palette knife looks much better than what the liner brush could probably do. Beautiful work.

Thank you doc!
