HEY! Your barn door is open!

HEY! Your barn door is open!

While looking through my stack of Walter Foster painting books, I came across a photo of a painting in the 'Composition Made Easy' book (page 12) that absolutely captivated me. I just had to try to paint it. I was a bit nervous to try it, and I gave myself a 50-50 chance to create something decent. The reference painting was by William Palluth.

The caption of the painting reads: "The TUNNEL COMPOSITION can be a view through a doorway, a series of arches, or a heavily wooded area resembling a tunnel. The main interest is usually through the opening beyond. In this painting the perspective lines within the barn heighten the tunnel feeling. Notice that the scene framed by the doorway can stand by itself as an 'L' type composition. "

The 1st pic is my finished painting. The 2nd pic is the reference painting by William Palluth that I used to model my painting. The 3rd pic is the line drawing I created to get me started.

This painting was incredibly fun to create. I probably spent 5 hours fixing stuff I did not like LOLOL.

A funny story: The first 2 people that I sent this picture to (they are not painters) did not realize that the painting is the view from inside a barn. They thought that the painting was just the middle section and I had it propped up against something to take the pic. LOLOL That made my day. Mission accomplished :).

Now as for the title 'HEY! Your barn door is open!'; that is a saying I heard a lot as a kid meaning your zipper on your pants is down ;)

16" x 20" canvas. As always, your comments (especially suggestions) are desired and welcome.

I love this compo a lot Tony! Superb!

I love the sky in your version, and your addition of the barn in the field. You nailed this one, and the story about your friends' reaction is priceless. Thanks for sharing :D
