Lepidoptera

The title of this painting is the scientific name for the order of insects that includes moths and butterflies. This idea (a landscape made up of/hidden in with butterflies) implanted itself in my brain and I finally gave into it. There are 8 different types of moths/butterflies within the painting; all based on real ones (some with more artistic license than others lol). I will upload my inspiration pics of them.

The style I was going for here was kind of Van Gogh meets Alice in Wonderland 😂 and I thought that could be better achieved in acrylics. This is my first acrylic painting except for two I did a few months ago that were white on black gesso only.
Oils are still my favorite by far! Acrylics do not seem to have the creaminess, body or depth I like for more realistic style painting, so I will most likely reserve them for more "fun" paintings.

Overall I think it translated well from concept to painting, although a couple of things I like less than others. It's definitely a weird one, but glad it's out of my head now! Enjoy looking!

Thanks Brian, Sunny and Matt!

Thanks for the thumbnail, loving this.....very creative. One moth looks like an owl, probably some defensive guise devised by nature

Thanks Terry! I was surprised to find so many weird, and sometimes a little creepy types of moths/butterflies while I was researching.

Very interesting - great idea!
