Original Creation

lowland sunrise

Inspiration for this painting came from4-5 reference photos - picking different elements from each one. I did not do this wet on wet. I did use some techniques that I picked up from both Kevin Hill and Chuck Black tutorials.

Thank you Tom! I did not prepare the canvas with any liquid medium. I did prime 2 extra coats of gesso in order to get a smoother canvas for my taste. It does dry between my sessions of painting, but I am used to this because of my pet portraits. I painted the sky in 1 day. I "sketched" out the remainder of the painting in a sepia toned "wash" to get my composition situated. Each day that I painted I only stopped when I knew that drying would not be an issue. A challenge that I am getting pretty adept at is remaking the same colors on different days! For example, the water and sky were painted on different days and I remixed all of the colors when I did the water.

Amazing sky and ... tree trunk!

That is one fantastic sky. So much going on there, especially that bright spot. Well done.

Awesome brightness and contrast that improves the mood in me and make me more cheerful when I look at it.

Thank you Jos and Alex!!
Thanks Sunnylady! My personal liking is for the more natural earth or subtle tones, so this one is kind of crazy for me! Something about that Indian yellow though.....an amazing color.

Really really well done Pam! I too have been working on an 18x24 that's not wet on wet...ala MJS. I love this style so much more...really allows for detail. You nailed every aspect of this painting...and that sky...πŸ˜»πŸ‘Œ

Thank you David! Adding many many layers is the key to adding depth. I am sure some of Bob's paintings (versions he did off air so he had more time) had a lot more detail than some of the JOP episodes. (more layersπŸ˜‰)

Thanks Pietro!! The inspiration photo of the sky was one over an ocean. But I did not want to paint an ocean scene, so I changed it!

Thank you very much, Charles. I was fortunate enough to sell this one for a happy buck as Bob says. 😁
