Crimson Experiment

joha59 27 Nov 2023

The colors Nancy was using for her Sunset over the Waves were inspiring me to try this seascape with her yellow wave and I recognized her problem with the crimson on black canvas, so I did this seascape three times (it was a very rainy day) to get an answer on two questions that were raised:
1: do I have to buy more expensive AC to get better results and
2: do I have to stop using LC on black canvasses with AC, what I don't like because of the dry surface?

The first one (2nd picture) was on stretched canvas with black gesso and LC,
the second one (3rd picture) canvasboard with black gesso and without LC and
the third one, the main picture, with the best results of the crimson, I did on canvasboard with grey gesso (a mix of black and white gesso, the sea a little bit darker then the sky) and with LC.

Hey Jos , das Problem ist einfach die Transparenz von AC denke ich . Da hilft eventuell wie Tom schon geschrieben hatte , extrem teure Hoch Pigmentierte Ölfarbe aber ich hab’s noch nicht ausprobiert . Apart from that, you have achieved a beautiful colorful result 👍🏼🇩🇪

May I ask what brand and grade of crimson you used? Beautiful paintings. Thanks for doing this and sharing with us. My Bob Ross black gesso came today and I am going to try that.

Hi Dirk, in stead of buying an expensive AC I am using grey gesso in the future for painting with a red tone, and Tomi, I used two brands for AC: Bob Ross In the 2nd and 3rd painting) and Lukas Studio (in the first painting) and the gesso was from the brand Marabu.

Jos I like the second one best using LC on the black gesso. I have only ever done one painting on a black canvas without LC and didn’t like how dry the canvas was. All three of these are beautiful my friend!

All three are very beautiful and love the difference in color!

Thanks for your kind words, Brian (I agree what you wrote about dry canvasses, I did it also some times, but I still do not understand how people are doing this without getting problems) and Sandy.

Well Jos, everyone needs to find his own way. I use the artist quality crimson only for selected parts, e.g. cover the black canvas with the same. Or in skies a la Bill. I would never use it in e.g. mountain base color or anywhere mixed in with darker colors.
After around 150 oil paintings I have used 1 37ml tube of this and began a second. So it’s not that bad. Else I have mentioned some more in Tomis last painting.
