Tranquil Valley

ktgrdn2018 05 Mar 2024

This is my attempt at painting Tranquil Valley, and it's also my first attempt at a black canvas painting. I'm sure anyone will be able to see things went wrong. Haha The first thing that went wrong for me was the shadow and highlight technique Bob used (changing the angle of the brush) didn't work for me. I ended up with highlights on both sides of my hills even when I tried to fix it later. I also need to get better at getting the right colors when mixing. My purple isn't vibrant at all so it makes the overall painting look somewhat gloomy. I also didn't get the red/brown mix right on the hills so it didn't stand out...so I decided to make that look more like the shadow of the hills instead. Everything else seemed to work, but I ran out of space on my canvas (I've been using 8x10 since I'm doing more practicing than anything), so I basically decided to add a bushy tree on the left with a bunch of bushes around it and a pond. I went heavy on the color and eliminated pretty much all the dark shadow I had, but when I added the sticks, it seemed to help bring some depth back. I continued to get water lines too thick, but I was over it by that point. xD The clouds are shaped weirdly, but my biggest success in this painting was finally getting the clouds to look puffy. :)
