Bill Alexander - Sunset IV

lightsnow 06 Jun 2020

This is painting # 53 for me. I've been wanting to try painting along with Bill Alexander for quite some time and really liked this painting he did. The video for "Sunset IV" was recently uploaded to the Alexander Art Youtube channel. Bill truly was a master because this painting looked deceptively simple. In the end, this was the most frustrating painting experience I've had since I began painting last year. I just couldn't get it to look like what he was doing in the video. I also must have cleaned my brushes at least 50 times during this painting, particularly when painting the sky. After finishing my sky and abandoning having light rays shining out from the lightest spot, I was already so tired of this painting that I considered scraping it down and just starting over some other day with a different painting. I tried to make the cabin but it really wasn't working so I improvised the rest quickly and tried to add trees like he was doing. After a week or so, I took another look at it and realized it isn't that bad looking in the end. It was just such a frustrating experience that I had to step away for a full week and collect myself. 18x24

Lightsnow, I recognized this one immediately, I fall in love with that episode the day they posted it. I watched it 2-3 times and do not have guts to try it.

I am sorry to hear that this episode drove you mad.
But I am so happy you did it. Your painting looks fantastic!
I was worried about the cabins far away when I watched episode. Now i see a wonderful example without any cabins!

Thanks for sharing not only painting but also the story behind!

The sun reflecting in the water is just wonderful. A very dramatic painting all around! Great work!

Beautiful!

@lightsnow: your version is amazing! This is wild nature. I love the darkness of the left part of the sky that brings brightness of the sky forward . You water is super! I love your version a lot! Especially how you created the distance! I now can relate to the brush cleaning process for this painting too. I was impressed how much trash I generated by wiping the brush with the paper. I used 11 brushes and 2 knives for the same episode.

Love it!
