Original Creation

Pastel Winter Dawn

lightsnow 04 Nov 2020

Painting # 72. This was another impromptu one. It started snowing here recently and I wanted to try painting this scene I had in my mind of a soft early winter morning. I used barely any paint at all for the sky to try and create a really soft pastel-like effect. I really didn't know where I was going with this painting and at some point I felt truly stuck but then I started using a newer, smaller brush to add all those layers of bushes and trees. This is also the first time I try to reflect trees in water. This took me around 2.5 hours. I spent a lot of time on the trees in the foreground. 18x24

Without looking at the name .... I knew those were Lightsnow's trees!

Great job done with the very delicate sky colours and the created depth with the grassy parts.

Thanks, Voy. I've been trying hard to improve my trees. I've been referencing photos and looking out of my window at the woods surrounding my house to try and make the limbs look more natural. I definitely notice that this is my "style." I was hoping this painting could turn into an exercise in painting naturalistic tree limbs. I'll keep working on that. I wonder if it would be possible to purchase a "1 hair" liner brush to paint the tiny limbs at the end of the tree branches. I've been using a variety of liner brushes including the Ross brand one but you can only go so far with that one. I've also started lying the canvas flat on a table and resting my arm on the table for support and stability. When I'm standing, I can't keep my arm still enough to paint those tiny little limbs at the end.

Dear Lightsnow,

I use a Davinci nr. 0 scriptliner. I cannot tell how happy I am with that and can produce VERY tiny limbs with that. Adding sufficient paint thinner will also help with creating such tiny limbs. cfr. a Dutch website where I order these:

I am unhappy with the Bob Ross Rubbish scriptliner nr. 2. It is very low quality and did split by the third time using it. Never again such expensive BS.

This is absolutely fantastic! The trees reflected in the water look amazing. I love the soft sky, and all the lovely purple highlights on the foliage. I would love to take a walk here and drink in all the beauty.
