Original Creation

Shimmering Pond in Deep Wood

lightsnow 06 Mar 2021

Painting # 84. Paintings incorporating gesso'd backgrounds are definitely my favorite. The only thing I had in mind for this one was that I wanted it to be in deep wood and I wanted the sun rays to filter through the trees. The rest of this was purely improvised on the spot. I had a lot of fun with this one. It was really laid back and relaxed. I broke the painting day in half, opting to add the liquid clear, the transparent color, and the titanium white then take a break, eat lunch, walk the dog, and come back to add the rest. It's hard to gauge how long this took me - maybe 3 hours altogether. This is also the first time I get oil painting in my hair, so I had a strand of cadmium yellow bangs going for a while today. 16x20. I was thinking of letting this one dry and adding more sun rays with titanium white afterwards in order to have the rays extend further in. What do people think of this? Would it work or just make a mess? Keep in mind the entire canvas would be dry at that point so it wouldn't smear easily.

I love the magical feel of the painting. It's like a fairytale. That water with the reflections looks so calm and beautiful. The trees are great. All those areas of dirt between the grenery add interest and depth. Great painting. I don't think it really needs any more sunrays. It's beautiful just as it is.

Terrific. The sunlight filtering through the trees looks realistic.

I agree with Umagaan that you might consider not adding any more rays. If you really want to improve a little, then you might slightly brighten up that central sun. But I would be hesitant with it!
In all, a splendid creation again from you!

This is extraordinary!!!!! Your details are wonderful You need to improvise more often. I'm a newbie but once the paint is dry, can't you wipe it off if you add more? Now we must talk about the most fantastic thing here.....84 paintings and first time in your hair? I had some in mine the first time, you are my idol!!!! LOL

Thank you for the nice feedback. I think I will leave the painting as is. I was initially considering having the rays break out of the background and enter the foreground but this is hard to achieve with wet on wet!

This forest is full of fairies and gnomes and other magical creatures!
Surprisingly I also after more than 60 paintings started to get paint not only up to my elbows but onto my face. Cannot figure out when that happens. Since many of my paintings are blue, I look like an avatar at the end of painting, only height is not there at all :)

This is beautiful,.one of my favorites. Have you added sun rays to another painting after it dried? Curious b/c i just did s28e4 under pastel skies and everytime i tried to do rays it turned yellow or green b/c of the blue
