Original Creation

The far end of autumn

lightsnow 24 Oct 2020

Painting # 71 and an impromptu one today. I had this idea in my mind based on a park near where I grew up. I used some black gesso on the bottom half and made some tree shapes using a natural sponge. You can see a bit sticking out at the top behind the trees made with oil. Overall, I was hoping to create more of a sense of distance with the path, but it didn't end up that way. I pushed myself to practice my grass creation using the 1 inch brush. Admittedly, this is something I always avoided as it never went really well. Overall, this was really relaxing and took 2 hours.

I think you're being too hard on yourself lightsnow. I think this looks great. There is a good sense of distance in your painting. Your grass made with the 1 inch brush looks excellent. Also nice work with the liner brush on your trees!

The trees give the distance here in the painting. The path could've helped with that if more narrow at the end and wider to the front. I do like it though, specially the colouring which also make the grass and trees stand out against that shy sky!

This is great! Awesome sky and trees and grass! Sky is awesomely well done!

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. My initial idea was to use colored gesso and create far away little trees that grow in size, and then add something like what I did up front with the oil trees. I decided to just do this for simplicity's sake, though, as I didn't want to just do an underpainting with gesso that day and wait for it to dry. I spent a lot of time on the sky. I got a new tube of paint, 'naples yellow,' which is a really light and soft pastel like yellow color. I thought it would look great in an evening sky. It ended up being a bit too light for my liking so I threw in a bit of cad yellow to make it more pronounced. I gesso'd this canvas twice, 2 good layers, so that the sky would blend really nicely and smoothly. I also opened up a new can of liquid white and was shocked at how liquid it was. My other can had started thickening up and I had not noticed over time. No wonder I had trouble adding highlights recently. I was basically slapping on a thick coat right off the bat!

This is beautiful and the trees are great!

I feel like Little Red Riding Hood is right around the bend in the path. Your tree highlights and grass are superb! I recently watched a few YouTube videos about horizon lines and vanishing points because I really struggle with structures (and paths, I am horrible with paths, yours puts mine to shame) and getting perspective correct. You should check some out, it might help you with your paths on future paintings.
