Tree of Life

lightsnow 23 Feb 2021

Painting # 83. I wanted to try something different this time around, and play with contrast. I started with a black canvas and started blending various greens, yellows, and blues. I then made the tree with oils. I was initially planning on having the bottom part purely black but then I started messing around with using a fan brush to make highlights and root like designs and it was fun so I kept that going and then gently blended with a larger brush. I think I might continue experimenting like this. I began another painting at the same time on that day but I'm still contemplating what to make of it.

I'm speechless. Wow.

Oh this is very love

Wow this so works, I love everything about this 😀

This is amazing! Great job.

What a beautiful tree! The limbs are very realistic, and what a neat background and root system. I’ll bet this was a lot of fun.

You know your way with a scriptliner! Awesome branches and roots!

Thanks everyone! This was also (evidently) an exercise in scriptliner work and using just the right consistency of paint. I wanted to add more really small, thin branches but I couldn't get just a "1 hair line" type of limb. Do those scriptliner brushes exist - 1 hair brushes? That would be my next step in this limb-making evolution.

That is incredible tree, my attention is caught by the roots. They look like the tree is crawling towards the viewer and ready to slide from the cliff. Interesting effect, i cannot explain more, it holds my attention.

The limbs are super-awesome. You do not need more details. It will become very busy I think. I would suggest to move in the direction of what shape you would like to convey to the viewer. May be to think on negative space, or overall shapes in the painting. I think your detailing is incredible and next logical step would be to grow your skills in the composition to enhance what you already have acquired. Some people call it design in the painting and this what defines great works of art. I think that at some point it is only natural to start looking into this aspect to control viewer attention.

I think this is awesome...and we all have roots
