Fall in Oils

wybnormal 17 Jan 2021

This is based on a tutorial from MazArt but I used some lean medium I made plus some Spike oil vs the normal linseed oil. I wont say that the mediums changed my life but they will change my painting :D For blocking in chunks of the canvas, the lean ( 2-1 turp/standoil) is magic. The spike oil smells nice and works really well for adding details on a wet on wet painting. I'm not keen on the leaves using a natural sponge.. need to find a better way - Picture 2 is the final edits I did a few days afterwards. I did glazes, shadows, more leaves, adjusted the shape of the tree and more details

Beautiful! I love fall colors

Great news! What is the spike oil in viscosity? More like linseed or closer to thinner?

I like blocking with lean medium too for landscapes. Only odorless paint thinner instead of turp. It dries quick and allows more control on next layers in wet on wet.

@sunnylady Spike oil is more akin to thick water. Not nearly as thick as linseed oil but not as thin as thinner or turpentine. It is for all intents a "essential oil" so much like the oils you use for adding scents to your home. I'm using a blend of 2 parts gum turpentine to 1 part stand oil for my lean medium. The GT does have a bit of a smell.. but it's not offensive to me.

Sounds extremely interesting this spike oil. I guess if I can buy it locally here I need to give it a test and see how I feel after painting session. Thanks a lot for sharing!

Here is a very good explanation about Spike Oil - https://www.jerrysartarama.com/images/PDFs/what-is-spike-oil.pdf

Thanks. Here is safety data sheet: https://www.nowfoods.com/sites/default/files/7463-spike-lavender-oil.pdf
