thank you everyone! Laura, similar to the mountain technique, I put the dark base color for the tree in with a fan brush, then cut off a small roll of highlight color and graze it down the tree so the base of the tree is picking up what it wants. Then just went back with the knife to touch the highlight a little more on the highlight side of the tree. here is a video of my livestream when I did this painting.
