Contemplative Lady

Tarthur 03 Jul 2025

My very first face I've ever painted! I have been avoiding painting faces, since I think it'd have to look like something. I didn't aim for anyone particular, just a face.

I started with a moody green swirl that took all of 5 minutes to do. I started with a dark grey canvas, and covered it in pthalo green. That pthalo green seeped through the paint for the whole of the painting, giving the strange greenish tint. Never make your job easy, eh? 😛

Instead of using the wipeout technique and wiping out light spots, I added white with a brush. I mixed a colour of burnt sienna and white for the skin, but the green comes out strongly.

I'm pretty happy how this came out, being my first real face that has a hint of realistic shadows and shading! Also my phone camera recognized it as a face, so WIN?? 😄 I really messed up the eyes, though, they look strange! 🙈

I'm sure you as the artist only see all the things you can improve, but please take a moment to notice just how much FORM you've achieved here! Especially with the lips and cheeks, they look like you something made out of wood that you can touch. Great job!

With the eyes you fall victim to the classic beginner trip and painted eye symbols instead of the shapes that real eyes are made up of. I think that happens since eyes are one of the most important things in the face and have such an obvious and strong symbol when abstracted. Once you know to look for the shapes the eyes are made up of and paint what you see instead of what you think an eye looks like you'll make a lot of progress, since you're obviously very talented

Thank you for your insight and kind words, Felix! 🙏

You did a great job!

Good job. Faces are difficult. You captured basic structure. Seeing is an important step in learning. I think you are on the path. Bobs paint alongs wont teach you much about portrait. But, the internet has lots of info. There are many useful books and videos
