Messed up the background straight away by using too much thinner (since the crimson coating didn't stick without), but wanted to keep trying despite the canvas being clearly too wet. Also didn't have all the colors. Miraculously, I still managed to make it work, not being unhappy with the end result (which is actually darker than the picture, but comes with more depth and contrast because of that).
Unfortunately I learned a hard lesson the next morning, as stains are appearing while drying (picture 2). So yeah, better to start over next time than push through. Leaving town now for a few days, so I'm curious to see how it looks when I get back and it's all dry... and if I'm able to recover it.
Thank you, Jos! Yes those greyish spots, it's almost like the paint is fainted away (into the canvas?) there. It happened before, which is why I got more careful using lineseed oil, but this is def worse. Oh well, the more you try, the more you learn!

Beautiful result despite the troubles, you mean the white stains, it's hard to see on the picture, maybe better to use oil for the background to thin the paint?
