Original Creation

3 gum trees.

Barbara 25 Mar 2022

This was painted in water-mixable oils and was first attempt at painting without following a Bob Ross video or another type of tutorial. Scary! I was able to apply a lot of things that I had learned but struggled a bit. I’m pretty happy with it but think I might try it again at some point.

Looks really good! I like the trees the best!

Thanks, paintingblondie!

Wow, well done! I have been intrigued by the water-mixable oils. Do you use that medium extensively? It looks like you've been able to accomplish with water most of the wash/thinning effects that OMS would have. Would you recommend water-mixable oils?

Thanks, Micah. Yes, I would recommend water-mixable oils. I use them from a health point of view and because my ‘studio’ is my dining room table, so I want to limit fumes and health risks. The brands I use are Holbein Duo Aqua oil and Winsor and Newton Artisan. Both are good and wash out well with just water or water and a mild soap. Winsor and Newton have a water mixable linseed oil which I use to produce Bob Ross style effects, such as water reflections etc. I tend to use this more than water to thin the paint. Let me know how you go if you try them.

Interesting. Using their linseed oil definitely makes sense. I tend to enjoy W&N products and have often contemplated picking up a few tubes of Artisan when I’m at the store. I am trying to be as solvent-free as possible, so these may be a way to do so.
