‘Simple Cloudy Sky’ Mk2; MJS Tv tutorial

DaveJ 02 May 2022

This second attempt at Michael’s oil over acrylic tutorial is done on an 8 x 12 inch canvas board - so not stretched vertically this time. Previous version resulted in a great learning experience. In addition to making the sky a lighter blue, it is marvellous how little Burnt Umber and/or Burnt Sienna is required to desaturate the blue in the sky. I’ll attempt to add the reference photo. I am quite pleased with this attempt.

Hi Dave! It is a great learning exercise you did! Clouds look distant and 3 dimensional and quite real with touch of impressionistic style. I love how sky is desaturated which brings calmness and haziness to the mood. I am imagining these skies closer to the sunset time when sky will get sunset colors in about half an hour on the summer day. I am looking forward to your next tutorial and I think you are doing great job to progress in your skills and knowledge of oil painting!

Thank you Sunnylady for your kind words for a learner. I still got caught by Bob’s Midnight Black, which I now remember Bob saying in at least 1 of his episodes is actually a very dark blue, so it makes a bluish attempt at grey when mixed with white. I also now remember Mark Carder in his minimum palette video saying that blue and burnt umber actually make a good black,. So adding burnt umber to the blue and the adding white could make the netter grey. Is that a fair assumption? I’m away for a few days so can’t go back and check my various notes.

Hi Dave, Bob Ross midnight black = alizarin + phtalo green. It is deep purple. But neutral purple.
Burnt umber and blue ( phtalo or ultramarine) do nice neutral dark.

Thanks for those tips Sunnylady, much appreciated. Cheers
