Original Creation

Storm at Sea on a Moonlit Night

DaveJ 11 Feb 2022

Tutorial after D Rosa on A3 grey-gessoed canvas. This painting of Aivazovsky’s painting during the mid 1800’s was a bit of a challenge with lack of language and new technique using the traditional painting medium of Turpentine, Linseed Oil and Damar Vanish (equal parts). I’ve only watched tutes on the more traditional painting techniques but not tried them before - so in at the deep end. Preparation included watching those other tunes, printing out many screen prints of the colour mix on the pallete to be applied, researching the most likely sailing ship and sketching it in actual size and position to go into the painting. A big thank you to Sunnylady for assistance in translation of the paints and basic technique that enabled me to bring it together. Given that this is my first foray into this area, I am very happy with the result and look forward to a bit of practice and then doing my next painting in this area; where I can fine-tune some of the mistakes made in this one.

Super creation Dave! That boat is so real!
Indeed, mister Rosa creates unbelieveable things on canvas. Myself, I dare not to try it out .... (yet!)!

Thanks Voy. It was a very enjoyable experience and I'm pleased with this initial result. Give it a go. Jump in the deep end mate. Cheers

Very beautiful result! The ship is so real and I love the sky and the water effects.
