Original Creation

Study based on Aivazovsky’s ‘Sea View’ (1895)

DaveJ 17 Feb 2022

Study based on Aivazovsky’s ‘Sea View’ 1895 painting, modified with the ocean being a bit wilder and the viewer standing near the starboard rail slightly forward of mid-ships, looking out at the impact in the waves made by the ship repeatedly crashing down into the on-coming wild waves. The horizon is the white tops of the waves at the viewer’s eye level. The painting was planned and done from the photo of Aivazovsky’s painting (attached) and painted using the more traditional medium-based painting method using a thinners wash and a 50:50 mix of Linseed Oil and Liquin Original for the subsequent paint layers. I did this painting on a double grey gessoed A3 canvas sheet as it was only a first practice. Quite happy with the result.
