Original Creation

Merida

ESCM 14 Jun 2020

I just finished this sketch of a figurine I have of Princess Merida from the movie Brave. I am happy with how the shape looks and I really like the resemblance I sketched of her. I decided to add a sword on her belt since it looked a bit plain on that side. I had fun shading this sketch. Overall I think this is one of my best sketches of objects.

Great job getting with the skirt! You've really managed to create tgr illusion of flowing cloth. 👌

Thank you so much Felix. I did a lot of shading on the skirt to give it that effect, and I’m glad that it matches the position I sketched her in.

ESCM, great job! Do you think it was easier after wood texture? Do you feel you became more observant? Did you feel it was easier to draw after taking on challenge with wood and lady bug? This figurine is very complex creation to draw as you need to solve two things simultaneously: 1. shadows and highlights but 2. You need to make her recognizable. You succeed at both I think!

Merida looks great and very close to the real figurine! Sword is a nice creative addition. But main contributor to A++ goes to the thing you made an action on the paper! This worth millions! Cherish you desire to learn as you grow as artist! You have absolutely amazing start!

Sunnylady, thank you so much! Your support and wonderful words mean so much to me. I did find sketching this easier after sketching the wood since when I sketched the wood, I really had to look at the shadows and textures of the wood to get it to look right. I did feel more observant because I noticed that on the figurine I sketched there were more shadows and action going on than what I originally thought there was. Sketching this definitely felt easier after tackling the wood texture, and I think trying out the wood sketch has helped me become a better sketcher and see things differently, like how the light shines on metal or the shadows on flowing cloth.
Thank you so much again for your support for my artwork and advice to help me branch out and try challenges to help me improve and learn. It really makes my day😊

Thank You ESCM! You are amazing!
