Original Creation

Dark Souls inspired castle and landscape

Jeffth 25 Mar 2024

It's finally done! I worked from an image found online when looking for 'dark souls inspired castle'. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find info on the original artist (now wondering if it was ai).
I had to simplify the castle way, way down, and it's the area I believe to be weakest. That said, I am mostly happy with how this turned out! It really showed me where I need to practice with perspective and spatial reasoning, but I can feel the brain muscle growing! Good experience. Next time, I would sketch a castle on paper until I'm happy, rather than paint the outline and improvise through it.

I used tape strategically on parts of the structure bc I wasn't liking freehand results. Controlling the very subtle color differences, and figuring out how to give texture to the castle without over detailing was immensely challenging.

Thanks for viewing!

Very cool! I would live there!

Wow. Simply stunning. Great composition and arrangement. The triangle on the left points the eyes up the walkway. Then it lift your gaze to the ramparts. The other elements add a ton of interest. This maybe the best TIB painting I've seen to date.

Wow! Incredible work Jeff! 🀩

Excellent painting!!!

drac, thank you. Me too! I would love to explore someplace like this.
Bob, that's so kind of you to say! We have so many talented artists here, and I am lucky to interact with and take inspiration from them.
Nancy, thank you :)

Fellow Dark Souls/FromSoft fans were the last thing I'd expected coming onto this website. But I love the painting!!

Thank you Sandy, Dave, and Zachy!
Zachy, cool to meet a fellow paint/souls enjoyer here. Thanks for commenting :D

Looking good, Jeff.

The atmosphere, to me anyway, is both light and ominous, which I like.

when i saw this i had to involuntarily " :o " just amazing...

Thank you Titia, I'm glad you like the atmosphere! I had a bit of trouble with it so I'm glad it still works.

Thank you Marz, I'm glad it made you feel something!

Wow! Great painting! I think compositionally the castle is the main object, the lines lead to it, contrast is quite high there. I think that maybe too many details in the rock/road up close and this may be the reason that you feel that castle is weak. Flip it upside down for few days and see where your eyes goes due to the highest contrast and from there you can decide if any adjustments will follow. Overall i like it very much, i think you did a great job here!

Thank you Sunny, great feedback. My feelings about the castle being weak stem from comparing it to the source material, in which the castle is extravagantly detailed compared to the rock/road. I think you are right, there is a mismatch in detail and where the focus should be compositionally. Definitely something to remember.

I don't know anything about the "Dark Souls" but clearly this castle is where the bad guy lives! To me, you have captured the entire mood as "wanderers proceed with caution". The rocks and walkway are extremely good. The sky is ominous, definitely adding to the overall mood. Fantastic work!

Jeff, THIS IS AWESOME!!!

Great job Jeff. It is well painted and I like the mood of it.

Thank you John, Tony, and Tom.
John - I'm so glad to read your comment, especially about your 'proceed with caution' remark! As that could easily be the moto of the Dark Souls series. I am pleased that it conveys this vibe to those who may not be familiar with the source of inspiration.

My goal is to paint places that I would want to explore, much like the world design of Dark Souls. (With some Bob Ross mixed in :D)
