Original Creation

Mossy Falls - Kevin Hill

Ninoum 22 May 2023

I’ve been hanging out a lot with Kev this past weekend! 😂

I was excited when I saw this one because it’s gorgeous and it said: “Oil Painting for Beginners”! I thought I would be done in no time… Well, it was quite far from being a beginner’s composition imho. I wonder what would be an advanced painting for Kevin?!!! Lol! 😆

Nonetheless, I loved every second of my painting time. Learned tons again!

Good Morning, Bonjour, Nancy. Another beautyful painting, I think at first glance you can see that it is not a beginner painting. So many details. Kevin has his full opinion and point of view. You did. a great job here👍🏼🇩🇪high Level

Beautiful.

Loving it! <3
The kind of scene I like to paint as well.

Btw, what size is the canvas?
I tend to paint on 50x60 or even bigger (Bob used 18x24 inches, which is about 45x60cm) , but for trying new techniques with more fine brush work it is not always the best choice as it takes waaayyyy more time. LOL!

Beautiful........Nothing Kevin paints is suitable for a novice but you did a great job here Ninoum

Happy Monday my friend! 🇩🇪☀️ Thank you very much!! When I saw it at first, I didn't think it would be an easy painting. I just think it's weird he labeled it for a beginner. I mainly chose it because of it's beauty and so many elements that I wanted to learn to paint were in it.

Thank you abha! 😊

Thank you very much Titia! 😃 I used an 18"x24" for this one. I normally paint on a 16"x20" but I realized that the bigger the canvas, (the biggest one I painted on is 22"x28" (which is about 55x70cm) the easier and detail/fine brush work is still ok. I have never painted on the size you use. Are you gonna do more from Kevin? If so which one are you eying on next?

Thank you Terry! 😊 I realized that now. Tho, I knew I could do this one, I just thought it would be way too challenging for a beginner. I would have pulled my hair off few months ago. Lol!!

Beautiful job here! Love the Kevin Hill paintings...such a fantastic painting!

Thank you very much Sandy! Kevin is my new crush! Lol. I love his compositions and his technique is quite different. He uses the wet-on-wet only in certain areas of the canvas. On the dry part, the first layer is all muscles on to fill that portion. Lol! But layering afterwards is a breeze!

It’s beautiful. Kevin is far too advanced for me. You are an amazing artist. I especially love that tree.

Awesome!

Oh my gosh Nancy this is definitely Boss level! I looked at some of Kevin’s videos in the past and I think his way produces awesome results but I also think that I don’t have the patience or steadiness to replicate one of his paintings! You are killing it girl! If it needs a home just lmk! 🥴

Thank you Cold! 😊 Kevin also has tutorials on his technique. If you ever want to do one of his creation, I would start with that. Don’t limit yourself.

Thanks Tom!

Thank you so much B! Very glad you like this one. 😀 You are right, Kevin’s tutorials run 3 times longer than BR. Most of the time, I have to finish the next day. Learning a new technique will do that. Can’t wait to feel more at ease with his.

I apologize if I offend anyone by saying this, but, you have too much talent to stay with Bob. Bob designed his paintings so that mere mortals like myself can feel good about what they do. For you, the JOP should be a stepping stone. Onward and upward! Beautiful painting.

You are too kind Tomi! 😊 Your comment put a huge smile on my face.

I still get very much so challenged with some of Bob’s. There are a few that I am waiting until I feel ready (ex.: Not Quite Spring). What is JOP? Sorry for my ignorance. 😞

Joy of Painting.

Ah! Of course! 😀

Hey Nancy, beautiful work as always. I've also been learning from Kevin, and I'm curious about a couple things. How do you like his comma stroke technique for leaves? I find that sometimes it works for me, and other times I can't quite get it to cooperate. How about his use of oil vs. paint thinner? I can't quite get the oil to act like he does, although his liner brush looks a lot longer than mine. I'm especially curious about how it was for you finishing on the second day, for me a kevin hill piece can take several days, at which point things have all dried. Working on dry spots, or going back over them with a clear medium to pick up where I left off sometimes feels awkward. How did you feel about it? Thanks!

Thank you my friend! Pleasure to share my experience and tips with you.

I have purchase his detail & liner brushes. I don't know if you have them as well but it made a major difference on the coma leaves. It's a technique to acquire tho. I am still not perfect with it but I am a little more comfortable with it that on my first attempt. I think it's just practice.

I use oil now. I feel it flows better than thinner. But it's just a personal preference. His liner brush is a game changer. Get it. I had a hard time before. It's a real breeze now. combined with oil, it's magical.

My paint was dry on the canvas on the 2nd day. I tried to put a hair of liquid clear and it didn't work good at all. Remember that he tries to dry up areas a lot of time by removing the paint with a shop towel, a dry canvas works better than a wet one with his technique. I just went over 2-3 times with my paint on the section/area I am trying to get something on and was able to get it great that way. It takes a little more time but I think leaving it dry is super important.

Let me know if you have any further question(s). 😊

Nancy, this is an absolutely beautiful painting of a beautiful scene. You have painted this very well, and adapted well to Kevin's level of painting. I agree with Tomi on her point, so keep going for gold. Cheers
