Kaieteur Falls Inspiration

Sunnylady 18 Apr 2022

Finally after a few months I have painted this challenging subject! It was exhausting but I am happy with the result, my home critic gave me hard time and I fixed few things. But he still does not like it.
Oil on 40*50cm /16*20in canvas.
I managed to take few pictures along the way, in case someone gets interested.

Just gorgeous with such depth! Love the rocky expanse on the right side and the spray from the falls! Good job!

This is awesome Sunnylady! Love your falls and colors!

@paintingblondie - thank you very much. Rocks were the most difficult part.

@Cronenberg89 - Thank you very much! This is my 3rd fall painting of a real thing. I am not considering any of BR waterfalls.

love the style.. really good congratulations .. I like the rocks particularly and the build up of the painting in the other images.

Just looked again.. I really like the water as well the colours and contrast are really good

@DavidF - I missed your comments. Thanks a lot for your kind words.
I indeed tried to keep it not as smooth like my seascapes but with more paint body. It was a challenge due to use of medium (linseed and turp/or spike oil). I got kind of mad at the middle as i could not resolve the rocks, but when the first unsuccessful layer dried and i went it with drier paint it started working, at the and I added rocks with pallet knife. However photo does not do it any justice, because it gets compressed and compression let all the texture of canvas to pop up in the screen photo and create Moir pattern.

Thanks for your words about water! This is my impression of flowing water, and it turns to be the most challenging part to make. Photo I took at location just shows it as a bunch of fluffy cotton balls dropping from the cliff. However when i was there for a quick study sketch this is what i saw and interpreted as flow of the water.

Sunnylady, You have done well to capture the grandeur of these magnificent falls the way you have; even picking up on the apparent air flow dynamics around the cavern behind the falls that appears to take the water vapour out and up on the LHS. Well done.

Dave, thank you so much for your kind words. I appreciate you look at painting from physics standpoint! This is great anchor point to build in. Thanks for letting me learn from your comments.
