Storm at Sea on a Moonlit Night. Study after Aivazovsky

Sunnylady 03 Jan 2022

This is made following tutorial after D.Roza.
Tutorial is inspired by Storm at Sea on a Moonlit Night, that was painted in 1849 by one of the most prolific marine painters Ivan Aivazovsky.
Size is 60*70cm.

I added photo taken of a just finished painting outside and difference to see this painting inside and outside of house was significant.

This is simply amazing.

Very atmospheric. Love the light on the water in particular.

@umagaan - thank you
@emchop - thanks a lot! Yesterday I was not happy about the light and today I like it a bit more.

Voy Kay Conqueror of Challenges

Admiral Sunnylady, if any girl would be chosen to rule the seas, you would be nominated!!

The shiny reflection on the water is just magic. Roza knows like nobody else on how to motivatye/inspire you to build up a boat.

Your sea series is getting richer by every painting!

This is really great! The ship (wonderful job) rocking on the stormy sea is very realistic! The light on the water is just right. Your sky is also beautiful but I keep thinking that the inner edge of the clouds near the moon is a little "crisp"? Maybe a few hairs and some air on the edges? Beautiful painting!

@flippergirl - Thanks a lot! Yes a little bit of fluff would not hurt for sure. I tried to do it, but since it half-dried it was a bit of a challenge that I did not fully overcome. A good eye flipper girl! Next time I will ensure that some edges are diffused better!

@Voy - thanks for your kindness Voy! Roza explains it in easy way how to build the ship, I would die trying to replicate thing that Aivazovsky did, but with that tutorial some decent ship can be produced quite well.

Beautiful Sunnylady. The ship detail, color and movement of the water with reflection is outstanding.

Oooo yes this is quite spectacular, I love the detail in this and the waves are just like what I imagine moonlit waves look like 😍

@Forest Vue Gallery - Thank you very much! I think ship could have more details, original ship by Aivazovsky is astonishing. I wish I could sail such type of ship to learn how it looks first hand to be able to create better details.

@Kaylee - thank you very much for your kind words! Few days ago i was standing outside and watching the moon swimming through the clouds and I was impressed how wonderfully Aivazovsky noticed those orange colors and blues in the clouds, and was looking at the borders of the clouds as I thought mine are a bit stiff. I hope when it dries and I varnish the painting all colors return back as at the moment they sank in.

Sunnylady, this is a brilliant action painting, especially the moonlight with it's ring and the way it highlights the clouds and reflections across the waves and the sails and the way the ship is moving through the water.

@Dave - thank you very much for your support Dave! This is a rare case when I managed with angle at ship quite okay, every time I attempt ship it loses the angle of masts to the horizon and painting loses action. I am working on the painting now where I placed ship but then realized it is not in stormy condition due to this wrong angle, and I decided to try to change mood by adjusting weather a bit on the water. Will see where the sea takes me :)
