Dusk Scene - Nil Rocha tutorial

Tom0779 27 Nov 2023

From last Saturday. I currently practice the wet in wet skies with watercolors. In this picture it turned out very promising.
The sky is the part in watercolor paintings where the most issues come up. So this needs some practice.
The scene has some light and shadow contrast which I really like.
Ink and watercolor on cotton paper 15 x 20 cm.

Very nice work,Tom๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡น

Looks great Tom. I definitely agree that skies created the major issues for me and the higher contrasting paintings stand out more. A good point in selecting the tutes to play with. Cheers

Gorgeous as usual Tom! Love the warm and colder sky. The contrast is so well done. I'd love to live in that house to escape at times.

This is very pretty Tom. Your ability to layer but retain transparency amazes me.

Very nice!

Very nice!

How long did it take you to draw this picture?ใ€€Very good and you are very popular on this community.

Such a gorgeous scene and the sky is extraordinary!

Magnificent painting and composition, incredible use of colour. Very refined technique for watercolour. I love it.

Very nice Tom and also a good one I think for the Bill Alexander technique!

Nicely done Tom!

Thanks a lot Dirk!

Thanks Dave. I learned to follow the Peter Sheeler method with the wet in wet sky. Basically it says, wet the sky area and let the water soak in for 2 minutes. Wet it a second time and let it soak in until a regular sheen of water is there. Then apply the paint.
This works by far best for me!

Thanks Nancy. I like to paint lonely buildings. Especially with watercolors this is my favorite topic.

Thanks Tomi. This is exactly how the transparent watercolors work. It needs some practice as all the other media are different.

Thank you Bob as always!

Thanks Jin for your feedback. I often do these paintings in two stages, the ink drawing part and the watercolor painting part. Mostly I do them on two different days. So I canโ€™t answer your question exactly. But it might be something between 45 and 70 minutes overall. Sometimes I need to wait a bit before a layer is dry, so that might be considered as well. Sometimes I use a hair dryer.

Thanks Sandy!

Thank you adl25 . I am glad you like it!

Thanks Jos. Yes I think Bill created similar skies as well.

Thanks Cosmo for your continued support!

Many thanks for your tips Tom, greatly appreciated, cheers

Thanks Dave. Always glad to help!
