Original Creation

Taiwan by 'Hado Hagen'

Voy Kay 13 Jan 2021

I've been so many times in Eastern Asia that I lost count. China, Mongolia, Philippines, Malaysia, Thaïland, South Korea, Japan ... never Taiwan though. Hado Hagen, that wonderful friend from Holland with her tsunami of incredible creations, painted several geographical postcards of which Taiwan took my full attention.
Hado gave me the green light and motivation to paint her creation on a larger canvas and so I did. For reference, I uploaded her creation as an extra picture.

Canvas used was a 12"x16" and was prepared with liquid white. Quite some colours were used for this creation (Ivory black, VDBrown, Phtalo blue, Phtalo green, Alzarin crimson, Bright red, Yellow ochre, Indian yellow, Cadmium yellow and T-white).
Probably I underestimated this one since the buildings, boat and various trees took quite some time and effort.
It was difficult to create some distinction between buildings and bushes, just as painting such a small boat, which is a huge effort for me to do. In fact, the boat is probably too small in perception with the buildings .... although it could be a kids' boat.
In all, I hope I succeeded in recreating this wonderful scenery. I'm not a fan of my own work this time, but know that might positively change within the next few days!
Almost forgot that for the final stages of this painting, I shared thoughts with Sunnylady for creative help.

Thanks again Hado, for allowing me to create my version of your version of Taiwan! Till next one!!

Great painting. Really love those palm trees.

Thanks Umagaan, palm trees are really easy if you you know and apply the four simple rules on how to paint them.

Till next one!

What four rules?

Finally I got to tell what I think!

This is incredible work Voy! The details you went in are absolutely great! The wood on the walls and little windows and that boat! I think you opened somewhat new in yourself to change from your normal style and try this new one.

Wow Voy! This is stunning! So different from anything else you have ever done. What a wonderful recreation of Hado's original.

Thanks Sunnylday! It is indeed not exactly my style but so much liked Hado's original that I simply had to try this!
There are 17 things I would alter still but .... that's for another version, another place, another time ....

Hi Heather!
Yes, I tried something different. Had huge troubles with the tiny bits and details (you know why!) but I was determined to finish it and place something descent on a canvas!

Oh Voy, 17 things! You are too critical of yourself! I wonder at all if the time comes when we do not want to change anything after we finished... but as you said another day, another version. I am very glad that you took this challenging painting and I think you are a conqueror of resolving the challenges. I am sure you should be inspired that after this painting Bob Ross paintings can be pimped to this level of details.

My darling friend, you know as nobody else how to elevate my mornings!
AND gave me something VERY useful to think of ..... pimping Bob with details ... hmmm. Worth a million!!

WOW!!!! Voy Kay, how Wonderful1 It is realy great what you made. You can be proud of your self. 'n 10!!!

Hey, thanks LJM! I will be trying a second one from Hado Hagen very soon! I love these kind of sceneries!

I like it. Nice details. Well done.

So very welcomed, your cheers Froggie!
I intend to do a second one very soon, the version of 'Vietnam', also by Nado Hagen. Hope everybody will like that one as well!

Looking forward to it!

Awesome pieces, both of them. I think your buildings look great! I'm working on a fantasy map for an author pal, and have a handful of tiny watchtowers and at least 3 tiny castles to paint! They're going to be a struggle. Oh, and a walled city. These will be dime-quarter size, so wish me luck.

Voy Kay Conqueror of Challenges

Thanks for appreciating these Chris!

Dime-quarter size???? Man, that's Hobitt's size!
Personally I could not handle such due to a fysical restriction with my dominant hand.
But for sure, I wish you a creative, steady hand, success and luck!!

I'm considering buying a pair of binoculars to fit my head like a jewelers loupe. Seriously, I already paint with reader's glasses due to aging eyes, but this will be the strain of all strains. I think using my single-hair brushes, a steady rest board, and an electron microscope, I might pull it off.

My word Chris, never thought that would be that cheap! I should try to get something similar from China, while we still can. Free market traffic for sales less then 24 USD from China to Europ ends in June this year!

Yes, I've been looking at these for a while, for doing detail work. My reader's glasses are (IIRC) 1.75x while these go up to 3.5x. Plus they're illuminated. Plus Plus!

Go for it Chris!! 😊

I did! Arriving today!
