Beaver Marsh

This is an interpretation of Beaver Marsh at Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio. I’ve been trying to incorporate more grounds and underpaintings plus trying to keep my brushwork simple and with limited detail. I find it harder to to keep it simple. My natural tendency is to want to add more detail.

Hi Micah, please enlighten me...is Beaver marsh a body of water? The dominant object in the centre appears to be reflected and if so would not the bushes also be reflected with a strip of land on which they are sitting?....if this is an incorrect interpretation could you please give us the correct one? Please excuse my ignorance if it is obvious.

Great question. Beaver Marsh is a body of water but because it’s covered with small aquatic vegetation, it does not provide very strong reflections. The large brown object in the foreground is a dead tree that is protruding up through the marsh. With that said, I did no put any reflections in the marsh water, but I wonder if perhaps I should try to make some indication of that even if just very subtly?

Yes, if you watch BR he would usually sit the bushes down on a strip of land and then reflect the same bush colour into the water by "pulling down" the bottom of each bush and then come across ...if you decide to go back to it i would love to see the result!
