Enslaved persons’ cabin at the Hermitage

mbbrickner 12 Jun 2022

Watercolor on paper | 9”x12” | This is based on a photo that I found on the internet but I had visited this place several years ago. This is an enslaved persons’ home at Andrew Jackson’s former plantation. I think it’s important for us to try to reclaim as much about enslaved persons’ lives as possible, so I appreciate when historians actually try to show people what dwellings looked like for these people. As horrific as their reality was, we must try to understand what they experienced and that means reflecting on the little information we do have about formerly enslaved persons.

lovely scene.Great texture here.Cheers.P

Thank you!

Looks idylic but of course the reality is quite different. The history of British slavery is our greatest shame here in the UK

I find it interesting to juxtapose natural beauty and human pain. To me, it’s the reminder that humanity often creates its own “orders” that are antithetical to the inherent beauty of nature in its unadulterated forms. I have studied some about slavery in the UK but definitely more from a perspective of its interchange with the US. I can’t say that I know much about the complexities of slavery within Britain itself.
