Cabin in the Hollow

joha59 02 Sep 2023

This is my first oval painting ever and maybe my last (I could use an oval passe partout next time): it was a hell of a job to get the paper straight on the canvas (I used adhesive plastic) and what I feared, the paint came under the plastic, so I have to rework the edges when the paint is dry with white gesso, hopefully it then looks as showed in the second photo ( I photoshopped the edges by cutting and pasting the oval shape). This painting is based on the version of Paul Ranson; I liked that one very much and the video of Bobs tutorial is very low quality, probably this is why this nice scene (very pretty and believe me: not too difficult) is not painted very often. On canvasboard 30 x 24 cm.

Super work Jos. Very good foliage. I always have troubles with the ovals.
Maybe an oval canvas is a good alternative.

Beautiful work! Love the oval!

Beautiful Jos.

Beautiful Jos! I gave up on contact paper, tried 3 different types and got the same results. Now I use Matt G’s method of drawing an oval on the canvas and then use painters tape. Works great, try it brother.

I really like it Jos. I know the ovals do take a little more time but they are kind of pretty when all said and done.

Thank you all Tom (did the foliage with the fanbrush and wonder it worked well), Sandy, Tomi, Brian (thanks for the tip for paintertape, I first try to cover the edges of the oval with white gesso after putting it on the canvas, maybe that helps), Pam (glad you like the deep wood), Dirk (again greeting from πŸ‡³πŸ‡±) and Matt (an oval looks pretty when having a good shape, that's the challenge)!

This came out great Jos!!!

For the oval done with Contact paper... I always put a layer of gesso first. It seems that the contact paper will stick better on it that way. Then, I scape off the edge of the oval with a credit card. I never get any painting running underneath the contact paper. πŸ˜‰

Thank you Nancy also for the tip, contactpaper is hard to get here.

nice job Jos.

Thanks Tony!
