I ran out of black gesso a few weeks ago, so I just used acrylic Raw Umber for the canvas preparation. Also, I didn't use Liquid Clear; I just used a bit of very thin Dark Sienna over the canvas before painting. I can't be sure it wouldn't have been better/easier if I used the materials in the instructions, but I think it was probably fine.
