Final Reflections

aarroonn 19 Feb 2026

Second attempt at painting a Bob Ross original with my girlfriend. I still find acrylics (or painting at all) a bit tricky, but got much inspiration from the community here—and Bob, of course.
That being said, I would really appreciate some tips and tricks. Two things in particular:
- I struggle a lot with the shrubbery, it just looks bland and flat.
- Space in general: things feel a bit condensed and lacking depth.
But all in all, I am happy with how it turned out and cannot wait to paint again soon, it is so much fun!

Acrylics

I love this one! Especially the layering and light reflections in the trees turned out so well. I think between this and the first painting you did there is already so much improvement, plus you worked with acrylics on a painting that was originally made with oils - that already makes a difference.
Now with regards to tips and tricks: I must say, I am struggling myself a little with those two. I wonder whether working with oils would make a difference as you can blend and work into the different layers differently. Generally, I think working with light and dark and letting both breath individually really helps - I think your shrubbery is most successful on the left side under the evergreens as well as on the right side under the evergreen as you allowed some of the darker background to shine through and then added some highlights without overpowering it. With regards to depth - I guess generally you would make things that are supposed to be further away either darker or blend them out... but again: I am working this one out myself.
I think you did super well and I adore the highlights on your deciduous tree and the evergreens.

Yes, blending in oils very different than acrylics. Since you're starting out, I'd say stick with one or the other for a month, then play around. If you pick acrylics, youtube has a lot of free resources. "wet on wet" isn't a strength of acrylics

Thank you very much both for the tips you shared. Much much appreciated and am looking forward to try them on my next painting!

Nice job Aaron, I have never painted with acrylics so any tips i might have offered are redundant

Thank you a bunch! And no worries, I am sure I will have questions for oils too once I am there.
