Blue Ridge Falls

hypercycloid 03 Mar 2026

Oil on canvas, 14 × 18 inch. First painting in 2 months, and of course I struggled with the waterfall, had to scape it off twice. I don't really love any aspect of this one, and don't really hate any aspect either. Where should I focus on improving?

I think it looks great! I like the patchy front scene a lot and the different highlights you use work really well together.

Its lovely, however the rocks need to be dark underneath, the trees need to have trunks in them and the bushes put in twigs and sticks

I like how your waterfall turned out Lucas. In answer to your question, bushes, always bushes! They're in numerous bob ross paintings so if you practice different ways to make them you will be happier with your results. Try to make them individual by creating different shapes and sizes, some fat some skinny, some tall some tiny, some leaning over, some standing upright, some with twigs poking out, different colours, bright at the top and dark at the base. Try starting with darker colours with only a few bits of brighter highlights carefully picked out coz when they are close together that helps to keep them separate, don't overdo highlights as Bob would say. I can see you've scraped some sticks into your bushes but they don't always show up very well on a black canvas especially when your bushes are lacey. Practice using different brushes and see where it takes you. I hope that helps. Now I've said all that I'm going to have to up my game aren't I. 🤣

Beautiful!
