Storm's A Comin

RebeccaJ 18 Mar 2026

12x16 Oil on Canvas Board with Black Gesso. I did better this time cutting out the oval with exacto blade vs scissor and ceramic serving plate - thanks for tip Helen! I also got to practice doing a wipe out revision. My first wave eye was WAY too big, so I scrubbed it off and redid it. A little bit of pure Prussian blue allowed me to recapture some of the darks that got killed by scrubbing. Somehow those wave eyes grow so I need to start smaller to take that into account. Overall, lots of fun to paint and not too difficult. Would recommend for a beginner that wants to try a seascape. Could also easily be painted on rectangle.

Great oval seascape, where did you buy that oval in just the right format and shape or was it there already in the house by (happy) accident ?

I searched the house and found medium size ceramic platter. Then I selected canvas board to fit that. I have several paper plate ovals, but the ceramic is more stable for either tracing or cutting around. I recommend garage sales and thrift stores for " painterly objects"

Haha its a nightmare isnt it. I had to troll the internet to get the right shape oval, I found trudging round the shops a waste of time. You wouldn't believe how many different shape ovals there are would you. I like them to be equal distance from all four edges of the canvas and I tend to use the same size all the time. If you search the dimensions you want it's the best way to find it. I think mine came from an online catering store.
