First attempt at painting, following along to The Grandeur of Summer. Had some difficulty with using the fan brush & not pulling under lying color off when trying the rounded tree highlights.

Congratulations with discovering oil painting! Welcome to the club! It is normal to pull some underlying color as that light mixing will give you middle tone and will add a bit of volume. Your trees are good! if you want to try to avoid mixing try to thin paint and use very light touches for highlights.

Thanks for your warm welcome & feedback! I did contemplate thinning the paint a little but noticed each paint I was using came out their tubes with slightly different consistencies which had me second guess myself.

Yes, that happens time to time. But also if you just opened the new paints they may have some extra oil in them. It will go away after few times. When you progress forward you need to add more and more oil. For example if you made your home-made liquid white with 75% of thinner and 25% of oil you may want to finish by using 50/50 mixture for thinning.
