Original Creation

Woodgrain Effect

Dirk1968 08 Nov 2023

Today I have something completely different to show .My different types of wood imitations. I tried to get as close to the original wood as possible. Golden walnut, Rosewood grained and Oak weathered. I used canvas and canvasboard to test how it works. After I was satisfied with my first woodgrain effect in my last painting but not completely happy, I started a few experiments and looked at various types of wood , videos of artists and their technique but basically I used the usual known technique, however, with a few variants. Ultimately, these are the results. Now it's up to you to judge it. I hope you like it.

Canvas, Canvasboard, Gesso and Acrylic paint,Sandpaper 240/400,Liquid clear, Paintthinner, Fanbrush,Blenderbrush, small Filberbrush,Time 1 ,5 Hours each

Wow amazing!! It looks like real wood.

these are especially stunning shown together, in my opinion. They'd be great accents around the house for me. Do you have any tips for someone trying this, that you wish you'd known before you started?

Good evening from germany , Elsie. Thank you very much . I take your words as Motivation πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ

Nice Dirk. I’ve done it a few times. Actually the next painting I post is one wooden effect I did that looks more like cherry wood

Hi Jeff, First of all i want to thank you . Your words honor me.😎take your Choice of Wood.,look
for the lightest Color in it and try to mix this Color with gesso and Acryl to prime your canvas.(2x)after 45min you can Start with grinding ,in germany 240er sandpaper and 400er . Smooth as you can.. Remove dust and apply liquid clear, rub with a paper towel. Then, depending on the wood, you mix two or three oil colors, which can be recognized in the original and stroke them hard and irregularly into the liquid clear. Then your thinner is used with the fanbrush, as can be seen in Bob's videos and you start to structure. I'll try to write an article soon to go into more detail πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺI hope that helps

Hey WD, thank you I'm really looking forward to your cherry wood effect πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ

Interesting Dirk to try different types of wood effects, I like the lightest the most.

Guten Abend Jos. il thought I'd upload it, so in between to show what I'm experimenting with. With one or the other painting, it's a great background πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ

Great effects Dirk. I think the oak is my favorite.

Good evening Dave, thank you so much for your great comment. I did not expect this great response and am amazed and happy at the same time. That's a great motivation. It will take some time, but the article will come. Greetings from rainy GermanyπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ

OMG!!!! 🀩This is incredible my friend!! I love them all! 😍 ❀️ Any chance you can share the tutorials where you learned how to make such real wooden panels?

Hey Nancy, First off all a big thank you . My work is actually based on Bob and Paul Ranson. The other were dozens of tutorials that I watched, especially by classical artists who work with acryl and oil and paint wood effects. You can find a lot on YouTube. I looked at a lot of woods, surfaces and cross-sections and then I really tested a lot, and tried. It took me a little time to be satisfied with the result An article on this is in the works πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ

Great wooden pieces you painted! Research always pays off and trials of course too.

Hey Sunny, thank you so much . You're so right πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ

So cool Dirk. I will have to try this soon.

Good Morning from Germany ,Tony..Thank you so much .I'm looking forward to your wood effects. . CoolπŸ˜ŽπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ

Will do some YouTube search for sure! Looking forward to your article!!!

Good Morning Beauty, what I can say is that Bob actually applies the oil paints arbitrarily and then more or less a random result. When applying the paint, I already try to apply the colors as they appear in the wood and then with the fan brush to pull the thinner as the original grain is, applied to Bob's technique this works quite well if the thinner reacts with the liquid. I hope this helps.πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ

Truly amazing! I hope you are well good sir!

Hey Cosmo, Many thanks, comes from the heart . I'm fine, I hope you are too. Thank you for your great words. I uploaded the article with step-by-step instructions ,If you are interested . πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ

Very realistic looking! I would say you nailed the wood grain effect :) looks great

Good evening from Germany, Daniel. Thank you so much. It took a while to get there, but with a little practice you can depict every conceivable wood effectπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ

You totally nailed it!
I first missed these because I hadn't been here for a while and I'm glad you mentioned having done these in the description of your concrete look painting.
And thank you for the article about it. <3

Hey Titia, ich danke dir von Herzen . I had made a wood effect, which for the first time, was okay but had not made me completely happy. So the ambition made me experiment and that is the result of it. I think you can use this method to represent every conceivable wood effect.πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ

A little late to the party but allow me to pile on with my congrats on your accomplishment. Thanks, too, for publishing the steps to success!

Good Morning from Germany ,Jon. Thank you
You so much . . It's never too late to leave a comment.. you're welcome. I'm glad you like itπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ

Frohes neues Jahr, mein Freund! Fantastic work with the different types of wood grains. These are so realistic and forgive me if mein Deutsch isn't richtig.......it's been since high school, 50 years ago that I remember some of it. Anyway.....your work is right on!

Hey Doc, first of all I'm happy that you like my wood effects and secondly that you tried to comment in my native language. There is nothing to apologize for. 50 years are a long time. Simply a great pleasure. If you want to try it ,I tried to summarize all the experiences in one article. Just a big thank you to you πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ
