Original Creation

Blaze of Autumn

vietti 28 May 2023

I’m really trying to work hard on my highlights, but cannot get the technique down. I’ve struggled with every single brush from the two-inch to the little oval and everything in between. I just can’t get the bristles to splay and properly put the delicate touches on. I’ve tried using little paint (won’t stick), lots of paint (mushes), thin paint (globs up), light pressure (just dots), heavy pressure (clogs brush) and varying levels of liquid base coat. A poor craftsman blames his tools and I know I’m a poor craftsman because I mess it up with every single tool in the kit. Positives: Two of my clouds look kind of OK. Really liking the tree bark.

I had the same struggles (and sometimes still do). I found that the bristles clumping is better and only use just the very corner of the brush. Hang in there. One of these days it will suddenly click. Nice painting.

Most of us have the same struggles off and on through our painting journey and as Tomi says, hang in there and keep painting. Have you tried just small painting sessions where you just concentrate on 1 or 2 elements and just practice that over and over; even just using gessoed cardboard, cheap tear-out canvas sheets or what-ever to practice on. You have some beautiful paintings in your portfolio. So keep practicing and painting and success will return again. In this painting you have captured the variation in colour through the clouds and how they fit together really well, your mountains are distinct and looking like mountains and I like the way your sections of grass, your path and water fit together. There is much to like in this painting, so keep going. Cheers

It is nice, keep painting. I am not good but I have seen some improvement over time. Hang in there.
