Ebb Tide

RebeccaJ 23 Jan 2026

8x10 Oil on canvas board. This is the 2nd time I painted this one. For whatever reason, the oil paint always bleeds around my edges when I pull off the contact paper, so I painted the background with Van Dyke Brown to fix all that. Because the smaller size, got it done in 3 hrs including cutting the paper. I think it would have been better with a slightly smalerl main wave, but when I was making the eye it grew on me.

Hi Rebecca, your painting is beautiful. I’ve been watching Bob Ross - The Joy of Painting. He mentioned if your paint is too thin, or too much liquid white or liquid clear on the canvas can cause the issue you’re describing. I hope this helps! He also says to use a paper towel to wipe any excess off prior to applying paint. Still beautiful! Great job!

I've seen it suggested that you gesso over the edges of the contact paper after applying it yo the canvas, so that the gesso seals any gaps.

Thank you Doglady and Regan for your suggestions. I will try the gesso over the tape / contact paper.

Contact paper sticks better on a fresh dry layer of gesso on the whole canvas. If you want to be sure no bleeding happens a second layer on the inner oval part and the edges of the oval will do the job for almost 100%. It works as a seal, as Regan already mentioned. I like your rough sea and beach!

Thanks all, I am going to try gesso over the edges on my next painting.
