Cactus at Sunset

lightsnow 17 Jul 2020

Painting # 57. This was my first desert scene and first time attempting to paint a cactus. Overall, this one was pretty fun and one of my quickest paintings. I finished this one in around an hour and then spent a bit more time at the end adding some extra details. I had a lot of trouble with the grass, as I always do. My 1 and 2 inch brushes have seen better days, so I find it difficult to create nice, soft grassy hills. I actually scraped off a large part of my grassy foreground and scrubbed it all off with thinner and started again. I tried adding more highlights with a fan brush to create more separation. I decided to take a few liberties and add another rock formation and a few more cacti, along with some shadows. This one was pretty simple but I still find that grass really tricky. I'd recommend trying this one to anyone who is more of a beginner or anyone who is looking for something to paint that can be done fairly quickly. 18x24.

I find cacti are curious beings. I think they are very interesting to paint as they are a challenge for someone who saw them only once like me. :)

You did very nice painting and I like your cacti! Super!

Beautiful scene! I love the grassy hills! I might try this one next time! I am always looking for a painting that can be finished relatively quickly.
